| Department of Geriatric Mental Health celebrates 4th Foundation Day |
The fourth Foundation Day of the Department of Geriatric Mental Health was celebrated on 20th and 21st August 2009. On 20th August a grand function was organized in the Scientific Convention Centre. Prof SC Tewari read out the departmental report. A souvenir ‘Vriddhotthan’ and a book titled ‘Sarvada Sukhda’ were released on the occasion. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Shri Lalji Verma, Hon’ble Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Finance & Medical Education. Guest of Honour was Dr Roger Bullock, Clinical Director, Older People’s Strategic Business Unit and Director, Kingshill research Centre, AWP, Bristol, UK. The Annual Day Oration was delivered by Dr Bullock on “ Meeting the dementia Epidemic”. A workshop on “Managing Difficult Behaviours in Dementia” was held. The function was presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Emeritus Prof Saroj Chooramani Gopal. |

This scientific event was organized on Saturday, the 4th July 2009 at the Scientific Convention Centre. Chief Guest on the occasion was Padmashri Dr Mathangi Ramakrishnan, Chairman, CHILDS Trust Hospital, Chennai. Guest of Honour was Shri Harbhajan Singh, IAS, Principal Secretary Medical Education, Government of Uttar Pradesh. Special Invitee was Prof Ramesh Chandra, Former Principal & Dean, KG Medical College, Lucknow. The function was presided over by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of the university – Prof Saroj Chooramani Gopal. Organising Secretary was Dr Rajiv Agarwal. |

| This event was held at the Scientific Convention Centre on Wednesday, the 25th March 2009. As usual, the department report was read out by the Head of Department, Prof JK trivedi. Prof saroj Chooramani Gopal, Vice Chancellor CSMMU was the Chief Guest. The Foundation Day Oration this year was delivered by Prof Mohan K Isaac, from the University of western Australia, Perth, Australia on “Are risk factors for suicide universal?”. A souvenir CD was released on the occasion. The function was followed by lunch. |
| An International Conference on “Advances in Free Radical Research: Natural Products, Antioxidants and Radioprotectors”: |
was organized along with the 8th Annual Meeting of Society for Free Radical research – India in the Scientific Convention Centre from 19th – 21st March 2009. The Inaugural Function was held on the 19th March. Hon’ble Justice Vishnu Sahai inaugurated the conference, Prof Saroj Chooramani Gopal, Vice Chancellor, CSMMU presided over the function and Dr TK Chakraborty, Director, Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow was the Guest of Honour. Organising Secretaries were Dr Farzana Mahdi, department of Biochemistry, Era’s Lucknow Medical College and Prof AA Mahdi, Department of Biochemistry, CSMMU. The Conference was graced by several luminaries in the field of free radical research from India and abroad. |
| Transmed CME held 17th January 2009: |
A Continuing Medical Education Program on Clinical aspects of Transfusion Medicine was organised by the Department of Pathology and Atate of Art Blood Bank CSMMU on 17th January 2009 in the White Hall of the University. Recent advances in transfusion of blood and blood products were discussed. Chief Guest at the inauguration was our Vice Chancellor, Prof Saroj Chooramani Gopal. | 54th Foundation Day Celebration,Department of General Surgery held 16th & 17th January 2009: |
This annual event was organized in the Scientific Convention Centre of the university on 16th & 17th January 2009. As usual the departmental report was read out by the Head, Prof Ramakant. Prizes were given out. The annual Prof PC Dubey Oration was delivered by Dr Sameek Bhattacharya from Delhi and Prof Nasim Ansari Oration by Prof NN Mahendra. A Continuing Medical Education program was held following the inauguration, in which many luminaries from within and outside the state delivered their lectures and interacted with local surgeons and postgraduates. Dr NK Pandey, President Elect, association of surgeons of India was the Chief Guest while Prof Saroj Chooramani Gopal, Vice Chancellor, CSMMU was the Guest of Honour. Organising Secretary was Dr Suresh Kumar. |
| Foundation Day Celebration, Department of Radiotherapy: |
The Department of Radiotherapy celebrated its Foundation Day for the first time on the 15th December 2008. This event was combined with the International Symposium on Prognostic and Predictive Factors in Cancer Management held on 15th & 16th December and inauguration of the Brachytherapy Unit and Foundation Stone laying of the Simulator Linear Accelerator in the department. The entire event was a high powered one, held in the Scientific Convention Centre. The Chief Guest at the Inauguration Ceremony was none other than Hon’ble Shri Lalji Verma, Minister of Medical education, Finance and Parliamentary Affairs, Government of Uttar Pradesh. Prof MC Pant, Head of Department read out the departmental report. Previos heads of Department were felicitated. The function was presided over by the Vice Chancellor, CSMMU Prof Saroj Chooramani Gopal. |
| VIIth NN Gupta- CG Agarwal Oration held : |
The NN Gupta – CG Agarwal Oration is organized annually by the Department of Medicine, CSMMU. This year, the oration was held on 13th December 2008 in the Brown Hall of the university. The oration this year was delivered by Dr MK Sahib, MSc, PhD, Former Senior Scientist Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow and Director, Genomics & Biotechnology, Wockhardt Research Centre at Aurangabad, Maharashtra. The topic of the oration was “New Frontiers in Biotechnology: Impact on Health Care”. |
| 2nd Das Rheumatology Foundation Oration held: |
The Das - Rheumatology Foundation was created in 2005 with the aim to develop the speciality in India. It organizes CMEs, lectures and conferences for doctors and public awareness programs for the public. As part of its activities, the Foundation organizes the Das – Rheumatology Foundation Oration every year on the Foundation Day of the Department of Rheumatology. This year’s oration was organized on 11th December 2008 in the PHI Auditorium. The oration was delivered by Prof SS Agarwal, Former Director SGPGI, Lucknow and ACTREC. Mumbai. The topic of the oration was “Current Status of Stem Cell Research in India” |
| 33rd Annual Conference of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons of India held |
This important event was held in the Scientific Convention Centre of the university from 26th to 30th November 2008. The conference was inaugurated on 27th November. Padma Shri Brig Anil Kohli, President, Dental Council of India was the Chief Guest. Prof AP Tikku, Member Executive Committee DCI was Guest of Honour. The conference was attended by a galaxy of international and national experts and delegates from far and near. Organising Secretary was Dr Divya Mehrotra and Chairman Organising Committee was Prof Shadab Mohammed. |
| 10th Joint Meeting of National College of Chest Physicians and Indian Chest Society (NAPCON 2008) |
This mega event was organised in the Scientific Convention Centre between 6th and 9th November 2008. Many luminaries of national and international fame attended the 4 days’ packed program. The conference was inaugurated on 6th November by the President of Vidhan Sabha, Uttar Pradesh, Shri Sukhdev Rajbhar and presided over by the Vive Chancellor, CSMMU Prof Saroj Chooramani Gopal. | Queen Mary’s Hospital celebrates 76th Foundation Day: |
The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, CSMMU celebrated its 76th Foundation Day on 27th November 2008. Dr Narendra Malhotra, President Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecological Societies of India (FOGSI) delivered the Dr Prabha Mehra Foundation Day Oration on “Beginning of Human Life” in the department. Vice Chancellor CSMMU presided over the function. The function also included inauguration of the renovated Labour Room and Emergency OT complex by Dr Malhotra. And the renovated Elective OT Complex by Dr Chandrawati, former Head of Department. The function was followed by lunch. |
| Prof ML Bhatia Memorial Oration held: |
The Department of Surgical Oncology held the Annual Prof ML Bhatia Memorial Oration on 29th October this year. The Oration was delivered by Dr Sen Pathak PhD, Distinguished research Professor in Cytogenetics, UT MD Anderson Cancer Centre, Houston, Texas on ‘Telomere Dynamics in Aging & Cancer’. The event was organized in the Auditorium of the PHI Building in the University. |
| 57th Annual Day celebration, Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Prof AN Srivastava Annual Oration held |
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, C. S. M. Medical University, Lucknow celebrated its 57th Foundation Day on 17th October, 2008. To begin with a single bedded unit in the department of Surgery providing OPD services from a small room and plasters applied on the open terrace, the Dept has flourished to 152 bedded, one of the most sophisticated state of the art & centre of excellence in Northern India.
This year the department has initiated “Prof AN Srivastava Annual Oration” in the memory of a great teacher and Ex Prof and Head of Orthopaedic Surgery.
The First “Prof. A. N. Srivastava Annual Oration Award for 2008” was conferred to Dr. Rakesh Kumar Srivastava for his outstanding contribution in Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation and care of disabled. The oration was attended by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of CSMMU, Dr Saroj Chooramani Gopal in presence of august gathering of retired teachers including Prof US Misra, Prof UK Jain, Prof OP Singh, faculty members, postgraduates of the dept. and distinguished Orthopaedic Surgeons of the state.
In his oration DR RK Srivastava spoke on “Regulating Orthopaedic implants – a government’s perspective.”
Earlier Dr GK Singh welcomed the guests and gave a brief history, activities and achievements of the department. Dr Vineet Sharma paid tributes to Late Prof AN Srivastava and Dr VD Sharma, HOD gave honors to Smt Vinodini, wife of Prof AN Srivastava who was present at the function along with other family members. Dr RN Srivastava, Convener gave honors to patrons of the dept. and other dignitaries on dias. Dr Ashish K, Dr. Santosh K & Dr Ajai Singh were present to welcome all guests and faculty.
The oration was followed by lunch for everybody including staff students nursing staff and employees of the dept. |
| Workshop on Traditonal Medicines held |
This event was organized in the Scientific Convention Centre on 17th & 18th October 2008, by the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics. In the current scenario when there is so much international attention on norms for assessing the safety and efficacy of medicines, it is worthwhile to discuss and promote the idea of complete scientific evaluation of all traditional medicines also. This will benefit both the modern system and traditional systems by establishing their effectiveness in disease processes. The workshop was organized with the aim of i) to discuss and evaluate the role of good laboratory practices in traditional medicine ii) ro discuss and evaluate the role of animal experimentation in traditional medicines. Iii) To discuss and evaluate the role of modern scientific techniques like NMR, PCR, MASS, Spectrophotometry etc for standardization of traditional medicines iv) To discuss and evaluate the role of clinical studies including phase 4 studies of traditional medicines. Scientists belonging to various fields of modern and traditional medicines like ayurveda, homeopathy, Unani etc were invited and recommendations made to state government, DST, AYUSH, ICMR etc. Organising Secretary was Dr Sanjay Khattri. |

This event was held in the Administrative Block of the University on Tuesday, the 22nd April 2008. Prof Saroj Chooramani, Vice Chancellor CSMMU presided over the function. Prof AK Mahapatra, Director SGPGIMS, Lucknow was the Chief Guest and Prof UK Misra, Head, Department of Neurology, SGPGIMS, Lucknow was Guest of Honour. The Welcome Address was given by Dr Sunita Tewari, Head of Department. Prof US Pandey was felicitated. The annual Prof PC Shukla Oration was delivered by Prof Harinder Jaseja of GR Medical College, Gwalior on “The Silent Debate on Meditation and Epilepsy”.

| 32nd Foundation Day Function-plastic surgery |
This event was held on Thursday, the 3rd April 2008 in the department. The 6th Late Prof RN Sharma Memorial Oration was delivered by Padma Shri Dr JL Gupta, ex Head of Department of Plastic Surgery, Safdurjung Hospital, New Delhi on My experience with organizing and running the largest burn unit of Asia”. Dr Saroj Chooramani Gopal, Vice Chancellor, CSMMU was the Chief Guest. A 2 day operative surgery workshop on Lipoplasty was also organized on 2nd & 3rd April to mark the occasion. | Post Graduate Training Course in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery |
This event was organised from 31st March to 3rd April 2008. This was a joint venture of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons (Glasgow, UK) and the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, CSMMU. The Chief Guest at the inaugural function was Dr Saroj Chooramani Gopal, Vice Chancellor, CSMMU. Organising Secretary was Dr Shadab Mohammed. |
| Annual Oration of Prof RN Misra Memorial Oration Foundation |
The Annual Oration of the Prof RN Misra Memorial Oration Foundation was held on Monday, the 31st March this year at the Old PHI Building. The oration was delivered by Dr Lalit Kumar, Professor, BRAIRC Hospital, AIIMS, New Delhi on “Stem Cell Transplantation : its newer applications”. A book authored by Dr Anupam Mishra was released. The function was presided over by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof Saroj Chooramani Gopal. |

| Department of Anatomy Foundation Day |
The Anatomy Department celebrated its Foundation Day on Saturday, the 23rd February. Prof Abdul Haleem, former Head of Department was the Guest of Honour while Prof SK Agarwal, Vice Chancellor, CSMMU was the Chief Guest at this function. The Department’s Annual Report was read out by Head of Department, Prof Ashok Sahai. The department honoured people who had pledged their bodies for the dissection laboratory after their death. Dr Sahai announced that a state of art Cytogenetics laboratory is planned and should be functional within this year. |
| Nano Science Lecture and CME in Pathology held |
This event was held in the Department of Pathology on 23rd & 24th February 2008. The inaugural function was presided over by the Vice Chancellor, CSMMU Prof SK Agarwal. The Chief Guest was Brig PS Dhot, Deputy Commandant, Command Hospital and Dr BS Das, Director, ICPO was the Guest of Honour. Dr AN Srivastava, Professor of Pathology was the Organising Secretary. Dr AC Pande delivered the Nano Science lecture.

| Rheumatology Update held |
This scientific event was organised in the Department of Rheumatology on 22nd February 2008. The workshop was sponsored by The Rhematology Foundation in association with Roche. The half day workshop focused on the diagnosis, evaluation and management of rheumatoid arthritis. Faculty included Prof DS Katti, Prof SS Agarwal, Prof SK Das, Prof RN Misra and Lt Col Vishal Marwah. |

This event was held on 18th February 2008 in the Scientific Convention Centre. After Saraswati Vandana and lighting of the lamp, the Annual Report of the department was read out by the Head of Department, Prof P Sitholey. This year’s oration was delivered by Prof Rudra Prakash MD, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Vanderbilt University, Tennessee, USA on “Homelessness and Mental Health : East and West”. Vice Chancellor CSMMU, Prof SK Agarwal was the Chief Guest. The function was followed by lunch. |

4th Annual Conference of UP Chapter of Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists (UP Microcon 2008) held: This event was organized in the Scientific Convention Centre on 16th February 2008. Shri Lalji Varma, Minister of Finance & Parliamentary Affairs, UP Govt was the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Function, while Shri Ashok Kumar IAS, Principal Secretary Medical Education, UP Govt was the Guest of Honour. The function was presided over by the Vice Chancellor CSMMU and Head Department of Microbiology, Prof SK Agarwal. The speakers emphasized the importance of infectious diseases, which have changed the course of history and influenced the fate and economies of countries. New and emerging infectious diseases are also marking their presence. Organising Secretary was Prof Amita Jain.

| Department of Surgery celebrates 53rd Foundation Day |
| The department of General Surgery,CSMMU,Lucknow celebrated it’s 53rd Foundation Day on 16th jan08 which was followed by a surgical education programme on 16th and 17th jan08.The organizing secretary of the programme was Dr Abhinav Arun Sonkar,Associate Professor in the Department.The programme started with two orations by Dr Rajendra Badwe and Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi from Tata Memorial,Mumbai,on 16th jan08 on breast and oral cancer respectively.This was followed by inauguration ceremony which started with lamp lighting,vandana and welcome address by Prof Sandeep Kumar. Mr Lal JI Verma(Minister of medical education ) was the chief guest and Dr V S Tiwari was the guest of honour. |
The amazing fact of this programme was that eminent faculties from within and outside the country delivered lectures on topics in which they are institution in themselves like Dr Rajendra Badwe and Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi from Tata Memorial,Mumbai.Prof Joseph Lau from Chinese University of Hong kong presented oration on techniques of liver resection.Then there were lectures by speakers from SGPGI ,,like Dr V K Kapoor,Dr Rajan Saxena,Dr Ashok Kumar,Dr S K Mishra and Dr Amit Aggarwal who presented lectures on various gastrointestinal and endocrine topics.In addition to these live operative videos were demonstrated by masters of surgery for the benefit of postgraduate students of surgery.In all the whole programme was a package full of knowledge both for postgraduates and young faculty of surgical sciences.In between these brain storming sessions time was kept for entertainment of delegates where a cultural programme and a banquet was organized on the evening of 16th night. |

| Workshop on Tendon Transfers in Leprosy and Hand Surgery held |
This workshop was organised by the Department of Plastic Surgery on 21st and 22nd December 2007. This was a live surgery demonstation workshop in which these surgeries were telecast to the audience to show the steps and nuances of the operations. Visiting surgeons were Dr G Balakrishnan, former Head of Stanley Medical College, Chennai and Dr Jerry Joshua of Mission Hospital, Kolkata. Lectures were delivered by Prof AK Singh, Dr AK Agarwal, Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Dr Rashmi Shukla, State Coordinator, WHO and Dr PK Sharma of the Department of Anatomy. As many as 21 leprosy patients all hailing from economically weak sections were operated on. |

| Worls AIDS Day celebrated |
| World AIDS Day was celebrated by the Department of Medicine on 1ST December 2007: Awareness and knowledge about HIV/AIDS is of paramount importance in control of HIV/AIDS. The Antiretroviral therapy Center (ART Center UP 02), Medicine OPD, Medicine Department, C.S.M. Medical University Lucknow organized an awareness quiz on the occasion of World AIDS day on 1st December, 2007 in which approximately 100 HIV patients actively participated and were benefited with the information given. Prizes were distributed by Dr.Ashok Chandra, Head of Department, Medicine Department, C.S.M. Medical University Lucknow on the basis of the scores patients gained in the quiz as well as the advice they shared with others. First prize was given to Mr.Hari Om, second and third to Mr.Pankaj Gupta and Mr.Narendra respectively. Best suggestion awards were given to Ms.Taranum and Mr.Ram Prasad. The Nodal Officer, ART Center, Prof A.K. Tripathi was present in the quiz along with other members of the ART unit. He also told about the treatment adherence importance to the patients. There was wide coverage of the event by both print and electronic media in order to create awareness and better knowledge about HIV/AIDS among the doctors and patients in the community. Patients were distributed sweets and high tea was also arranged for them. Nurses (Sister Dolly Victor,N.J.singh 7 Arti Sarkar) of the CSM Medical University tied red ribbons to faculties, employees and administration workers of the whole CSM Medical University in order to create awareness regarding HIV/AIDS in the general public. For this purpose pamphlet distribution was also done in general mass. The program turned out to be a great success. |

| 48th Annual Conference of Indian Society of Hematology & Transfusion Medicine |
The 48th annual conference of Indian Society of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine was organized by Dr. A.K Tripathi (organizing secretary) during 15-17 November 2007 at Scientific Convention Center. It was jointly organized by the Department of Medicine and Department of Pathology, CSM Medical University Lucknow. This conference was organized for the first time in Lucknow. Around 400 delegates form India and abroad attended the conference. The conference was inaugurated by Sri Lalji Verma, Hon’ble Minister of Medical Education, Govt. of UP and the Guest of Honour was Dr. S.K. Agarwal, vice chanceller, CSM Medical University. The theme of the conference was "Hematological Disorders - Discover the Potentials for Care and Cure". The scientific programme consisted of wet workshops, guest lectures, PG quiz, free research paper presentations and poster session. The conference was a great success.

| Pediatrics Foundation Day 2007 |
The Department of Pediatrics celebrated its 54th Foundation Day on 6th November 2007 in the department. The Chief Guest on this occasion was Ms Sehba Husain, Executive Director, BETI Foundation, while Guest of Honour was Shri Lav Bhargava, Chief Trustee, Meher Bhargava Foundation. The departmental report was presented by Head of Department, Dr Savitri Thakur. Class III employees of the department were honoured. Two orations were held. Prof PK Misra Oration was delivered by Prof Smita Bhatia, City of Hope National Medical Centre, Los Angeles, USA on “Health related outcomes in survivors of childhood cancer: The price of cure” while Prof NL Sharma Oration was given by Dr Charles Sklar, Pediatric Endocrinologist, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, New York, USA, on “Overview of growth and endocrine problems in survivors of childhood cancer”. The function was presided over by Vice chancellor CSMMU, Prof SK Agarwal.

| Gujral Bhargava Oration 2007 held |
This annual event was organized by the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics on 6th November 2007 in the New Lecture Theatre of the department. The orator this year was Prof Anil Gulati, Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Midwestern University, USA. Dr Gulati is an alumni of King George Medical College who has done pioneering work on endothelin. The oration was followed by lunch. Prof SK Agarwal, Vice Chancellor, CSMMU presided over the function. |
| Queen Mary's Hospital celebrates 75th Foundation Day |
On the occasion of the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Mary’s Hospital, the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology had an elaborate celebration. The day started with a workshop on foetal monitoring. Topics of discussion were cardiotocography, congenital malformations and prenatal diagnosis. After this, a Post Operative Ward and Intensive Care Unit was inaugurated by Dr Pankaj B desai, President of the Federation of Obstetrics & Gynecological Societies of India (FOGSI). The evening saw a formal function in the Scientific Convention Centre to mark the occasion. His excellency, Shri TV Rajeshwar, Governor of Uttar Pradesh was the Chief Guest. The Departmental profile and report were presented by Head of Department, Prof Vinita Das. A souvenir was released to mark the occasion, as was the departmental website. The Foundation Day Oration was delivered by Dr Pankaj Desai. The function was followed by a cultural program and dinner. |

The Department of Neurosurgery celebrated its Foundation Day for the first time on 20th October 2007 in the Scientific Convention Centre. The Departmental Report was read out by the Head of Department, Prof Mazhar Husain. The first Dave-Newton Oration was delivered by Prof PN Tandon, Emeritus Professor AIIMS, New Delhi and President, National Brain Research Institute, on ‘Clinical research: Opportunities & Challenges’. Eminent Neurosurgeons from around the country graced the occasion including Prof AK Bannerji, Prof AK Singh, Dr VS Madan and Dr DK Chhabra. The inaugural function was followed by a CME on Hydrocephalus. |

A live operative workshop on Minimal Access Surgery and CME was organized by the Department of Surgery, C.S.M. Medical University (formerly K.G.M.U.) and Lucknow College of Surgeons on 6th and 7th October 2007 . Organising Secretary was Dr Vinod Jain. The focus of this workshop was on Laparoscopic Hernia repair, Video assisted thoracic Surgery (VATS) and Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy. One full day workshop and CME was dedicated to various hernia surgery like TAPP & TEP for groin hernia repair of ventral hernia, incisional hernia and diaphragmatic hernia, and on next day, various thoracoscopic surgeries and cholecystectomy was demonstrated. This was for the first time when a live telecast of Laparoscopic Hernia surgery was done in this Medical

It was very heartening to notice that along with local delegates, large number of delegates from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Punjab, Uttaranchal, & various cities of Uttar Pradesh actively participated in this workshop.
