At a special function organised on 26 th April 2005, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav was invited to KGMU campus to lay the foundation stone of the much hyped Centenary Hospital . This is a dream project of the present administration. The 677 bedded facility will complement the existing hospital in areas which are deficient at present – namely critical care beds, day care, operation theatres and state of the art diagnostics. There will be no division into separate departments. Public private partnerships will be utilised to provide sustainable quality. Provision for free medical care of the needy has been built into the project. The project ran into controversy lately as a section of teachers feel that the existing infrastructure of the hospital should be improved first before embarking on such an ambitious project.
The Chief Minister took part in the ‘Bhoomi Poojan' and then layed open the foundation stone. After laying the foundation stone, the Chief Minister proceeded to the Department of Cardiology where he inaugurated the new Cardiac Catheterisation Lab and the renovated wards. Then he inaugurated the new Cobalt Unit in the Department of Radiotherapy. This was followed by a brief function in the Administrative Block, in which there were addresses by the Vice Chancellors of KGMU and KGDU, State Health Minister and the Chief Minister.
