devoted to improving the health of populations around the world by training clinicians in the methods of epidemiology, clinical research, data analysis and critical appraisal. This is expected to raise the quality of care provided by the clinician and to encourage him to undertake high quality research in relevant national health problems. These trained clinicians are then expected to train others so that the message is passed on. To this end, INCLEN has trained a handful of teachers from each selected medical college in the principles of Clinical Epidemiology, Health Economics, Health Social Science and Biostatistics, at centres in North America and Australia, and set up Clinical Epidemiology Units in these colleges. There are over 82 CEUs all over the developing world spread in 34 countries and consists of 1718 members. There are 7 such CEUs and 243 members in India (together called IndiaCLEN). CSMMU UP is having one of such CEUs with 31 members. The 1st teachers from KGMC were trained by INCLEN in 1987-88 and in 1991. The CEU was formally inaugurated in its present premises in the Administrative Block of the College and Prof MK Mitra was the founder Director of this unit. After his superannuation in 2002, Prof RC Ahuja took the leadership till 2009 and currently Prof GK Singh is the Director of this unit. In 1996, the CEU was upgraded as the KGMCICE. In December 1999 this centre was chosen for the establishment of "Centre for Excellence in Clinical Research" by Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. KGMCICE. ICE is thus a constituent unit of both INCLEN (www.inclen.org) and IndiaCLEN (www.indiaclen.org).
KGMCICE had the distinction of hosting the XX Global Meet of the International Clinical Epidemiology Network (INCLEN), which was held in India for the first time after 15 years. This mega event, organised under the chairmanship of Prof RC Ahuja, Director KGMCICE was held at Jaypee Palace Hotel and Convention Centre, Agra from 11th to 14th February 2004.
