The Division of Oncology was created in the
Department of Surgery, CSMMU, Lucknow in 1979 by
the Government of Uttar Pradesh. Prof. NC Misra
headed this unit for the next 17 years and under
his leadership the Oncology Division established
itself as a centre for excellence in academics,
research, training and clinical service. It has
over the years shouldered the major
responsibility of providing tertiary care for
cancer patients from Uttar Pradesh, the
neighbouring states of India and Nepal. Prof. NC
Misra was joined by Dr. Arun Chaturvedi as
Lecturer in Oncology in 1989. Subsequent
additions to the Oncology Unit took place in
1995 when Dr ID Sharma, with his extensive
experience of early detection of breast cancer,
joined as Professor and Dr. Sanjeev Misra as
Pool Officer. The Department of Surgical
Oncology was created by the Government of Uttar
Pradesh on 3rd September 1998 with Prof. ID
Sharma as the Head of Department .
Activities :
1. The Department of Surgical
Oncology is recognised by the Medical
Council of India for the MCh Surgical
Oncology training programme. One seat
is available on the basis of All India
Entranve Examination. Two MCh Surgical
Oncology exams have been conducted by
the department in the last 2 years.
2. The
department has been recognised as one of the
centres amongst 3 in the country for cancer pain
and palliative care by WHO and National Cancer
Institute, Bethesda, USA.
3. There are currently
2 funded research projects running.
4. The Surgical
Oncology Division has been actively
organising conferences and scientific meetings
over the last 20 years of its existence.
In the last 5 years it has organised 4
such meetings. It organised the National
Conference of Indian Association of Surgical
Oncology
in September 2003.
Facilities :
The Department of Surgical
Oncology is presently situated in the
newly constructed Surgical Oncology building
and New Surgical Block. The new department
building has operating room suites, indoor
wards, Conference Room, Consultants' Room,
administrative offices, private rooms
and investigative facilities. The department
runs a day care chemotherapy facility
on Wednesday and Saturday.
