KGMU creates a new Department of Rheumatology
The first Department of Rheumatology in State of Uttar Pradesh and Northern India was created at King George’s Medical University vide Government Order No 778/71-3-2006-KG-96/2004 dated 21.3.06. with a grant of Rs. 7.18 crore (about US $1.7 million). This includes a grant for a new building, personnel and equipment required to make it into a viable and vibrant patient care and research center. This is the third Department of Rheumatology in country, the other two being in Chennai & Hyderabad.
Rheumatological diseases, present with musculoskeletal pain, and are very common. About 20 % of population suffers from musculoskeletal pain at any given point of time. The once in a lifetime prevalence is 100%, that is, every one will suffer from a Rheumatological illness in his/her lifetime. |

Objective
The following are the objectives of the Department of Rheumatology
1. Patient Care
2. Research to develop newer techniques for diagnosis and management of rheumatological problems.
3. Training / Teaching in Rheumatology |

Building
A new three-storied building of the Department of Rheumatology is being constructed in the premises of Lal Bahadur Shastri Kendra (Formerly known as RALC) and Infectious Disease Hospital and is expected to be completed within six months. A total of Rs. 2.25 Crore has already been released for the building. The building will house the wards, the offices and modern research labs.
To give a jump-start to the functioning of Rheumatology Department, the University has allotted already constructed space in Lal Bahadur Shastri Kendra for the time being till construction of the new building is completed. |

Special Activity
Community Out reach – Two areas Gosaiganj and Rakabganj Kundari have been selected, where a team of doctors and social workers visit and provide diagnostics and Medical help. |

Bed Strength
30-bedded wards which include beds in 22 beds general wards, 4 private ward, 2 in ICU and 2 in day care.. |

Future Planning and Directions
1. The DM Rheumatology course will be started shortly after due recognition from MCI. 2. Establishment of Molecular Biology and Cell Culture laboratory equipped with latest technology for better patient care, basic & clinical research. A total of Rs. 2 Crore has already been released for the equipment, which includes research equipment for a Molecular Biology lab including Real Time PCR, Gel Electrophoresis and Documentation; Tissue Culture lab; and Immunology lab including ELISA reader and Immunoflourescence. 3. It will also be possible to do Bone densitometry, vascular studies for vasculitis and Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, and studies for crystal arthritis.
4. Since most patients require some rehabilitation the stationing of Rheumatology Department at Lal Bahadur Shastri Kendra brings it very close to Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. However a small in-house physiotherapy unit will also be present. |
