 DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY
Foundation Day 2008
 
Psychiatric care at this institution was started in the year 1956 in the Department of Medicine of this institution with creation of posts of lecturer and reader in Neuropsychiatry. Many eminent and distinguished persons like Prof. N.N Wig and Prof. B.B Sethi had worked on these posts. An independent Psychiatry Unit within the Department of Medicine was created in December 1966 with appointment of Prof. B.B Sethi as full time Professor of Psychiatry and Incharge of the Unit. Prof B.B Sethi also had the honour of becoming the Founder Head of the Department of Psychiatry when this department was carved out from department of Medicine on 1st March, 1971. Subsequently the Department progressed by leaps and bounds in areas of teaching, research and psychiatric care.

M.D in Psychiatry was started in January 1969. There are 6 seats annually for the MD Psychiatry course. At present, the department has a total strength of16 teachers, but at present only 8 positions are filled.

Activities:
1. The department provides daily outpatient services, 24 hours emergency care, child and adolescent OPD including child guidance clinic, drug de-addiction services, sex clinic, geriatric consultation services and mentally handicap certification.
2. The Department of Psychiatry has organised national level conference of Indian Psychiatric Society in 1992 and Indian Association of Clinical Psychologists in 1994. Many national workshops and zonal conferences have also been organised.
3. This department has also been a collaborative centre for several research programmes of W.H.O and I.C.M.R.


Facilities:
1. The department has 120 functional general beds and 6 private wards. There are 2 male wards,1 female ward and 1 child and adolescent ward.
2. Indoor admission facilities are available for patients suffering from psychiatric disorders (adults, children and adolescents), drug addiction, sexual disorders and geriatric disorders under the expert supervision of senior teachers.
3. The department also provides 24 hour "on phone helpline" services.
4. Treatment facilities include drug therapy, electroconvulsive therapy, psychotherapy, behavior therapy, occupational therapy, recreational therapy and music therapy. Computer facility, biochemical lab, EEG lab and psychological lab are also functional.
5. The department is the nodal centre for implementation of Government of India National Mental Health Programme.

Founder Head of the department Prof. B.B Sethi has been recipient of the prestigious Dr. B.C Roy Award for developing the specialty. The Foundation Day is celebrated every year in which academic programs are held.
