 DEPARTMENT OF PLASTIC SURGERY
New Plastic Surgery procedure described
Plastic surgery was started in KGMC, in the year 1953, by Late Prof. RN Sharma, who is considered the 'Founder' of this speciality in North India. In 1962, a unit of Plastic Surgery was created. MS in Plastic Surgery was initiated in 1966. Late Prof. MH Khan was the first postgraduate student. The course was accredited by the Medical Council of India in 1969. Subsequently, a separate Department of Plastic Surgery was started in 1976. The extension block of Plastic Surgery was commissioned in 1979. A 2nd floor was formally inaugurated and commissioned on 22nd December 2003 and faculty offices have shifted on this new floor. Further extention of the department is under way.

Activities:

. The Department of Plastic Surgery provides post graduate teaching, training and research facilities to MBBS, BDS, MS and M.Ch. students. It is the only department of its kind in UP. The MCh in Plastic Surgery is a 3 year course. Candidates with MS degree in General Surgery (recognized by Medical Council of India) are eligible for admission through an All India Entrance Test. There are 3 seats annually for this course.
2. Rround the clock emergency.
3. The department is a centre of excellence in cranio-maxillofacial and hand surgery.
4. The department is active in organising and hosting scientific meetings. It hosted 3 national Plastic Surgery Conferences, the last ones in 1997 and 2000. It has hosted the 12th annual conference of the National academy of Burns (NABICON 2004). Usually 2 workshops are organised each year - one for newer advances in plastic surgery and the other for teaching general / orthopedic surgeons. The Annual Function of the department is held in March every year.

5. The department has entered into collaboration with Smith train USA for performing free cleft lip and palate surgery from November 2003.
^. In partnership with the World Craniofacial Foundaton, a regional craniofacial centre has been devloped for providing free or subsidized treatment for needy patients.
7. Collaborative research in tissue culture techniques with leading experts in the field.

Facilities:
i) Speech therapy
ii) Physiotherapy and splint fabrication workshop
iii) Maxillofacial laboratory with afaculty in charge and two full time technicians.
iv) Microsurgery laboratory .
v) Facilities for naso-endoscopy.

Output :Bed strength : 35 general beds, 2 bedded ICU, 2 elective theatres

Achievements:


1. Three faculty members of the department ( Dr RN Sharma, Dr R Chandra & Dr SK Bhatnagar) have received Dr B.C.Roy award.
2. Faculty members presently hold important posts such as Secetary, Association of Plastic Surgeons of India, Member, Advisory Board of World Craniofacial Foundation and awarded Young Scientist award of Indian National Science academy (INSA).
