DEPARTMENT OF PHYSIOLOGY
The Department of
Physiology was founded in 1911. The first head of department
was Lt. Col. CA Sprawson (1911-23) and
subsequent heads have been Prof W Burridge (1923-46), Prof CP Mishra (1946), Prof SN Mathur (1946-55), Prof
RC Shukla (1955-79),
Prof S Kumar (1979-80), Prof SD Nishith (1980-89), Prof DN Khanna (1989-93), Prof
SN Tandon (1993-95),
Prof N Shukla (1995-96), Prof S Singh (1996-99) and Prof US Pandey (1999-2004).
The present Head
is Prof Sunita Tiwari. MD (Physiology)
course was introduced in the year 1941 and the
first MD was awarded to Dr. Narendra Singh in 1943. The
department has produced several distinguished
physiologists such as Prof RC Shukla who has contributed
to the field through his work on dual action of
acetylcholine and Prof AS Paintal
whose work on J receptors in the lungs is also
highly acclaimed and internationally recognised.
About 50 Postgraduates form the department has risen to become heads of physiology departments in various medical colleges in the country.

Tuberculosis & Chest Diseases, Obstetrics
& Gynecology, Pediatrics, Orthopedics and
Yoga & Naturopathy (Lucknow
University).

(Physiology) students with yearly intake of 2
students.

Several research projects (ICMR, Intramural,
CST) are running in the department. Total
number of publications in international/national
journals by faculty members : 78

The department has organized APPI conference
in 1997 & 2002, Indo US Problem Based
Learning workshop in collaboration of
South Illinois University staff in 2002,
and All India Neurophysiology Update in
April 2000. A National Workshop on Impedance
Plethysmographywas held on February 18th
& 19th 2005. E. Awards : 1.Best branch award of Association
of Physiologists & Pharmacologists
of India twice in the year 1997 &
2002.

which caters to patients from various
clinical departments.

measuring peripheral blood flow and continuous
cardiac output monitoring for patients
from clinical departments and for research
