The Department of Pediatrics
was founded in 1956. A new block of the Gandhi
Memorial Hospital was built to house the
Children's Hospital. The first batch of Diploma
in Child Health (DCH) students passed out in
1962 and MD Pediatrics students in 1963. Prof N
L Sharma was the first Head of
Department(1960-77) followed by Prof PC Bajpai
(1977), Prof PN Saxena (1977-86), Prof PK Misra
(1986-98), Prof Indu Wakhlu (1998-2000), Dr KL
Srivastava (2000-2006) and the present Head is
Prof Savitri Thakur. The department started the
first Neonatology, Social Pediatrics and
Pediatric Intensive Care units in the state. At present, the
department has 9 faculty members and 47
postgraduates. The annual intake for the MD
course is 9 students and for DCH 11 students (9
+ 2 from Provincial Medical Services cadre).

Facilities:
1 . The Childrens' Hospital is a 100
bedded hospital.
2. Full
fledged Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with
16 cots and also provides the neonatal services
at the Queen Mary's Hospital. The NICU has
facilities for ventilation, blood gas analysis,
incubator care, phototherapy, exchange
transfusion and physiological monitoring A
neonatal follow up clinic is held in the OPD on
Wednesdays and in Queen Mary's Hospital on
Mondays.
3. A Pediatric
Intensive Care Unit (PICU) has been built and is
functioning since March 2001. It is a 6 bedded
'state of the art' unit having central oxygen,
vacuum, compressed air facility, physiologic
monitoring equipment and 3
ventilators.
4. A 6 bedded Pediatric High Dependency Unit equipped with 6 ventilators.
5. Five semi private wards.
6. A very
active Pediatric Oncology service provides a
high quality of care to children afflicted with
cancer. A Cancer Clinic is held in the
department on Thursdays.
7. Pediatric Neurology Clinic in the OPD on
Thursdays.
8. Routine
vaccinations are given in the OPD everyday
except Sundays and holidays.
9. All ward procedures like lumbar
punctures, intercostal drainage, biopsies etc.
as well as Colour Doppler Ultrasound are being done in the
department. Peritoneal dialysis is done when
required.
10. The Department
has its own laboratory for bedside
investigations, a library and an auditorium.
There are 2 blood gas analysers, one of which
functions round the clock. Blood gases can be
done at a cost of Rs 200/-.
11. The pediatric department
library has computer facilities with round the
clock internet connection. The department also
has an LCD projector for teaching
purposes.
Activities:
1. The
Department provides core undergraduate and
postgraduate training in Pediatrics.
2. It also
acts as an advisory body to the Medical
Department in disease containment and
surveillance activities.
3. Training of
doctors and Medical Officers.
4. Besides
clinical research, the Department is also
involved in epidemiological and community based
research on Essential National Health Issues
sponsored by international agencies such as
INCLEN, USAID, UNICEF and WHO.
5. It is a
centre for IGNOU training and PGDMCH
examination, IMNCI and breast feeding training.
