The building of Department of Pediatrics was founded in 1956. A new block of the Gandhi Memorial and Associated Hospitals was built to house the Children's Hospital. The first batch of Diploma in Child Health (DCH) students was admitted in 1961 and MD Pediatrics students in 1962. Prof. N.L. Sharma was the founder Head of Department of Pediatrics. The department started the first Neonatology, Social Pediatrics and Pediatric Intensive Care Units in the state. At present, the department has 11 posts of faculty members and 52 residents. The annual intake for the MD course is 9 students and for DCH 11 students.
Facilities Available:
The Children’s Hospital is a 125 bedded hospital. There are additional beds for NICU & PICU.
Neonatal unit has 40 Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) Level III care beds in children ward equipped with requisite facilities, and 12 Level II care beds at Obstetrics Hospital in Queen Mary’s Hospital. A neonatal follow up clinic is held in O.P.D. on Wednesdays.
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) has 12 beds equipped with requisite facilities for intensive care in older children and provision of fellowship in Pediatric Intensive Care.
A 6 bedded Pediatric High Dependency Unit equipped with requisite facilities.
Five private wards and two semiprivate wards.
Pediatric Oncology services are provided to children afflicted with cancer. A Cancer Clinic is held in the department on Thursdays.
Pediatric Neurology Clinic is held in the OPD on Thursdays.
Routine vaccinations are given in the OPD everyday except Sunday and holidays.
The Department has its own laboratory for bedside investigations, a library, a lecture room and an auditorium.
The Pediatric department library has computer facilities with round the clock internet connection.
The department has translational medicine unit and epidemiology services.
Activities
The Department provides core undergraduate and postgraduate training in Pediatrics.
It also acts as an advisory body to the Medical Department in disease containment and surveillance activities.
Training of doctors and Medical Officers.
Besides clinical research, the Department is also involved in epidemiological and community based research on Essential National Health Issues sponsored by international agencies such as INCLEN, USAID, UNICEF and WHO.
It is a centre for IGNOU training and PGDMCH examination, IMNCI and breast feeding training.
