The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery came
into being on 17th October,1951, under Prof BN
Sinha. Postgraduate courses of MS & Diploma
in Orthopedics were started for the first time
in the country in 1951 and 1959 respectively. A
Unit of spinal cord injury was created in 1965
under supervision of Dr Susheela Verma. This was
upgraded to a 50 bedded unit in 1979 - becoming
the first such unit in North India.
Rehabilitation and Artificial Limb Centre &
Fracture Clinic were established in 1969. A
Joint Care Unit was established in 1989 where
total hip replacement and total knee replacement
and arthoscopic surgery were started for the
first time in U.P. For acute management of
severely injured and polytrauma cases, Trauma
Center in the New Emergency Complex came into
being in the year 2003.
There are 6 seats annually for MS in
Orthopedic Surgery and 6 plus 3 nominees from
Provincial Medical Services for the Diploma in
Orthopedics course. |

The annual O.P.D. attendence is roughly
30,000. Department bed strength is 152. The
number of major surgeries done annually are 1500
and minor surgeries number around 2700. Acute
emergency surgery cases number about 660
annually.
