 DEPARTMENT OF OPTHALMOLOGY
 
The Department of Ophthalmology was started as an independent unit in 1916 with Prof AEJ Lister as the Head, and 1 lecturer. Subsequently, major developments took place in the 1920s and 1930s under Dr BGS Acharya. It is one of oldest departments of Ophthalmology in the country, and one of the first to introduce the course of MS (Ophthalmology) in 1935. The DOMS (Diploma in Ophthalmic Medicine & Surgery) course was started in 1951. The department has a separate building (New Ophthalmic Block) which was commissioned in 1955. Presently there are 6 seats each annually for the MS and DOMS courses.

Activities:

1. The department serves as the major reception for all sorts of eye problems in the region and provides state of the art management of ophthalmic disorders.
2. The department runs a busy outdoor service, the annual OPD attendance exceeding 35,000. Outpatient department also provides services for refraction and minor surgical procedures.

3. Eye relief camps are a major activity in the winter months. In each camp outpatients services and drugs are provided and intraocular and extraocular surgical procedures are performed.
4. The department was selected as a training center for Extra Capsular Cataract Extraction and Posterior Capsular Intra Ocular Lens surgery under the Government of India- World Bank Project in 1994. Eye Bank has been recognised by Eye Bank Association of India.
5. The following text books were edited by Dr Sandeep Saxena and published by Jaypee Medical Publishers, New Delhi. 1. Clinical Practice in Ophthalmology (2003) 2. Ophthalmic Surgery- The Cutting edge (2005) and 3. Optical Coherence Tomography in Retinal Diseases (2005).
6. An instrument for measuring retinal lesions "Saxena Grid" has been designed by Dr Sandeep Saxena and is being manufactured by Ocular Instruments, USA.

Facilities:

1. The department is equipped with i) Automated Visual Field Analyser, ii)Yag Laser, iii) Fundus Camera, iv) Slit lamp with digital anterior segment photography v) Phacoemulsification system, vi) argon laser, vii) A & B-Scan Ultrasound viii) Biometer & Pachymeter ix) Vitrectomy system, x) Non contact Tonometer apart from the routinely used instruments in present day opthalmic care.
2. The department has separate seminar hall, modern operation theatre, dark room and internet facilities.
3. Facilities for modern cataract surgery (Phaco, small incision cataract surgery with foldable intra ocvular lens) are available. Cataract surgery is routinely performed free under the National Program for Control of Blindness.
4. Speciality clinics are held in i) Contact lens and low vision, ii) Glaucoma & Visual Fields, iii) Squint and orthoptics iv) Diabetic Retinopathy Screening, v) Retina - Flourescein Angiography & Laser, vi) Ophthalmoplasty v) Uveitis vi) Cornea clinic and keratoplasty.

Output:

The bed strength is 100 in 3 wards. The annual indoor admissions number about 2200 and the number of major operations performed is close to 2500 in a year.
