 DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY
It was in the year 1973 that a separate unit of Neurology was created in the Department of Medicine. Ten beds from Prof. NN Gupta's ward in the Department of Medicine were earmarked for the neurology unit. A full fledged separate unit of Neurology housed in a new building came into existence from August 1976 and administrative separation of the new department came in March 1977. Prof Devika Nag was the first Head of Department (1977-1998) and the present Head is Prof. Dr. R.K.Garg. Postgraduate (DM) course in this superspeciality was started in the year 1981. Forty eight postgraduates have been awarded the degree of DM (Neurology) so far. At present there are 3 seats annually for the same.
Facilities:

1. The department is the first integrated department of neuromedicine in this state and provides the major reception to neurological disorders of all types in the region. It has 56 beds.
2. A full fledged electrophysiology unit providing 22 Channel EEG, electromyogram / nerve conduction velocity with facility for single fibre study, evoked potentials, colour doppler for extracranial vessels, brain mapping and echo flowmeter.
3. A neurotoxicology unit was established in 1978 in collaboration with Industrial Toxicology Research Centre, Lucknow for research in occupational health hazards and pesticide toxicity.
4. Recently fully equipped physiotherapy and speech therapy units were established for outdoor and indoor patients.


Output
:

The annual admission rate is about 900. Outpatients services are offered on Monday,Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Annual OPD attendance is about 25,000.

Activities:
1.The department organised the Annual Conference of Indian Academy of Neurology in October 2002 and International Symposium on Headache in November 2003.
2.Regular sessions of Botulinum Toxin in Movement Disorders and spasticity are held twice a month.
3.Presently there are ten funded research project underway.
4.Prof NN Gupta Oration is held every year.
