 DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY MEDICINE
 

The Department of Social & Preventive Medicine (now Community Medicine) was the first to be established in Uttar Pradesh in 1958. Within 2 years of its establishment, the department started Rural Internship training - long before the need for rural orientation was realized at the national level. MD in SPM was started in 1961.This was the second institution in the country to start the Diploma in Public Health (DPH) course in 1964.The department was upgraded to a postgraduate department in 1972 and shifted to a new multistoried building in 1976. Presently, a 3rd floor of the department is under construction. A 6 seated lift has been installed. The conference room has been renovated. Renovation work at Rural Health Training Centre, Sarojini Nagar, ETHSC Mati and Banthra is under progress.

There are 3 seats annually for MD (SPM) and 10 seats annually for the DPH (Diploma in Public Health) program.

Activities

1.The department has four outreach centers, which are being used for training, research, and community health work. Besides teaching in community medicine, the department provides Comprehensive Family Medicine services at 4 health centers attached to it at Sarojini Nagar, Banthra, Mati and Alambagh. These consist of OPDs and inpatient wards at Sarojini Nagar PHC and Experimental Teaching Health Sub Centres (ETHSC) at Mati and Banthra.
2. The department is a recognized training centre for in-services training of Medical Officers working in Integrated Child Development Service Scheme of the Department of Social Welfare and nucleus of National Services Scheme of the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
3. The department is also a nodal centre for study on Maternal and Child Nutrition in
Uttar Pradesh.
4. The department has taken over administrative control of Primary Health Centre Sarojini Nagar (PHC) and started weekly clinic in Obstetrics & Gynecology and Family Planning in collaboration with the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology CSMMU., in addition to routine OPD services , inpatients and field programs.
5.  Consultancy services by senior faculty in field of MCH, Epidemics, HIV Surveillance, Integrated Disease Surveillance Project and other health related activities at International, National and State level.
6. Annual UP Chapter IAPSM Conference held.

Facilities/Services Offered:

  • Outdoor Clinics: at Urban Health Centre, Alambagh, Primary Health Centre Sarojini Nagar and ETHSC of Mati and Banthra. Routine Health Labroratory facilities are also available at these centers.
  • Indoor Facility: at Primary Health Centre Sarojini Nagar, ETHSC Mati and ETHSC Banthra
  • Speciality Clinics of Ophthalmology and Obstetrics & Gynecology are available at PHC Sarojini Nagar. Biweekly MCH Clinic at UHC Alambagh, ETHSC Mati and Banthra.
  • Immunization Clinics at all the four centers attached to department as well as Queen Mary's Hospital, CSMMU. 
  • Mobile Health Clinics: in selected remote villages of Sarojini Nagar. The department has 3 mobile clinics under the Reorientation of Medical Education scheme.
  • Community based Comprehensive Medical Care: to selected group of families at Urban Health centre Alambagh, RHTC Sarojini Nagar, ETHSC Mati & Banthra through mobile clinics as part of Intern training Program.
  • Portable ultrasound machines and other equipments are available in the department. These are being used in community based medical care and research programs
  • Ambulance services for transportation of patients have been made available and functional.
  • Others: Services offered under all the National Health Programmes including DOTS Centre are available at Primary Health Centre, Sarojini Nagar, Lucknow

4.NCD Risk Factor surveillance under Integrated Disease Surveillance Project.  Sponsored by WHO/Govt of India
5.Concurrent Assessment  & Technical Assistance to Districts of Uttar Pradesh sponsored by Department of Family  Welfare Govt of UP.
6.Reaching Adolescent through Adolescent Health & FLE workshops is schools/colleges of Lucknow & establishing Adolescent Health at Lucknow sponsored by SIFPSA.
7.A study of Factors Affecting Acceptability of Microbicides Among Different Population Groups in India sponsored by   ICMR, New Delhi
8.Developing a community based model for adolescent health services in rural population sponsored by WHO

Clinical Training of medical university faculty, District Specialists, Nursing and Paramedic staff in HIV/AIDS sponsored by UPSACS.
2.Training and orientation of medical professionals in arsenicosis and its mitigation in affected districts of UP.
