New Cardiac Catheterisation Lab & new ICCU in Cardiology
The Department of Cardiology was created as an offshoot of the Department of Medicine in July 1977. Initially the department was located in the Department of Medicine in the Gandhi Ward. It shifted to its presen tlocation at Shahmina Road, just across the road from the Emergency & Trauma Centre after a donation from Mr MA Lari, and is popularly known as the Lari Cardiology Centre. Presently, the department is headed by Prof RK Saran, who took over from June 2008. Further donation from BP Halwasiya Foundation paved the way for construction of the present OPD and Administrative complex. Clinical care is provided by the faculty assisted by 10 Senior Residents who are DM (Cardiology) students.
DM Cardiology Course: Intake for this 3 year course is 4 per year. It was started in 1983. The session starts in January and admissions are made through an all India examination conducted by the university in the month of December every year. Sixty six DM students have passed out so far.
Facilities:

1. Intensive Cardiac Care (ICC) unit comprising of 21 beds. Emergency admissions are made directly round the clock.
2. Sixty six total beds including 6 private rooms.

Complete invasive and non-invasive facilities.

Activities:
1. Emergency:24 x 7 Dedicated Cardiac Emergency and ICCU services

21 bedded Dedicated Cardiac ICCU & Direct emergency admissions.

On average 70-100 ICCU admissions /week.
·
3 Senior resident (Post MD Candidates) on duty round the clock under guidance of faculty.

All modern advanced facilities like IABP, Pacing, ABG etc available

Over 3000 Acute ICCU admissions every year
2. OPD runs five days a week ( Monday - Friday) and specilality clinics - Angioplasty follow up Wednesday and pacemaker / BMW on Saturday. Average attendance is 150-200/day. Prophylaxis for rheumatic fever with penicillin injections is given every Wednesday and saturday, totalling about 100/week.

3. Non invasive lab has an HP Sonos 5500 machine acquired in 1998. Facilities include transesophageal ECHO, stress echocardiography and tissue doppler imaging.

4. Invasive Lab: A Digital flat panel Cardiac Catherization Laboratory Axiom Artis of Siemens is functional since September 2004. Previously an old Siemens cath lab was functional from 1988 till 2003

5. Research: The Department of Cardiology has a very active Clinical Research Unit and is involved in a number of collaborative and independent research projects.
