The Department of Biochemistry was created by a government order on 3rd November, 1986. Initially teachers from various other departments of the College were deputed to run the department, and it was only in December 1990 that Dr RK Singh joined as first regular Professor and Head of Department.

Activities: 1. The department is engaged in undergraduate education of both medical and dental students. Two Gold Medals (Shri Ghulam Hussain Gold Medal and Prof. SS Parmar Gold Medal) are awarded every year to the students who secure highest percentage of marks in Biochemistry at the Ist professional MBBS examination.

2. There are 4 funded research projects currently.
3. The department is also engaged in collaborative research in the field of chronobiology with an international academic giant, Professor Franz Halberg, University of Minnesota, U.S.A.
4. Recently, the department was selected by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, as a " nodal center" under the National Diabetes Control Programme of the Government of India.
5. An International conference on 'Role of Free Radicals and Antioxidants in Health and Disease' was organised in February 2003.
6. The department is an active centre of internationally approved BIOCOS project. It is involved in collaborative research with many centres in India and abroad in the field of chronomics of tumour markers, chronoradiotherapy and 24 hour/7 day blood pressure/heart rate monitoring in health and disease.
