Brief History & Resume of the Department:
The Department
of Anaesthesiology started out as a unit in the
Department of Surgery in the year 1911, and did
yeoman service in the overall development and
progress of surgery in this institution for
about 5 decades. In the year 1961, a separate
chair for anaesthesiology was created, thus
establishing the first separate Department of
Anaesthesiology in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Prof. RP Badola was appointed as the first head
of department. Under his able guidance the first
Pain Clinic was started and the speciality of
neuroanesthesia was developed. The first batch
of MD students passed out in 1964. Prof Badola
was followed as Head of Department by Prof S
Yagnik, Prof TN Agarwal and Dr BK Singh and the present Head of
Department is Prof Jaishree Bogra.
There are 7 seats annually for
the MD course and 5 seats for the diploma course
which are filled up by government nominees
(DAPGs). |

Activities:
1. The
Department of Anaesthesiology presently has a 22
member strong faculty and provides routine and
emergency anaesthesia services to the entire
hospital including superspecialties – cardiac
surgery, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, oral
& maxillofacial surgery, pediatric surgery,
urology and oncology. The number of surgical
procedures receiving anaesthesia annually number
about 15,000.
2. The
department also provides service to intensive
care and ventilator units.
3. Teaching and training of undergraduate
and postgraduate medical and dental
students.
4. Setting up a state level ambulance services under
Trauma Centre and a modern anaesthesia unit for
organ transplantation are in the offing.
5. The department runs a 10 bedded intensive care facility in the Emergency & Trauma Centre, with ventilators and state of art equipment. |
