 DEPARTMENT OF THORACIC & CARDIO - VASCULAR SURGERY

The Chest Surgery Unit of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University was established on August 19, 1959 under the guidance of Prof A Charan who was also the first Head of Department. Prof Charan pioneered and institutionalized the regular practice of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery. He adorned the chair of the President of the Association of the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons of India. The unit was elevated to a full fledged department in 1998.

The superspeciality MCh programme in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery was started in 1964. The programme takes 1 student each year for the 3 year course

Activities :
Several procedures were started for the first time in Uttar Pradesh in this Department viz: cardiac pacemaker implantation (1970), open heart surgery (1981) , on pump coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) operation (1982), flexible bronchoscopy (1982). heart valve replacement (1983) and video assisted thoracoscopic surgery (1997), off pump CABG including thoracotomy CABG (2002).

Facilities :
The Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery has 50 beds, 2 full fledged well-equipped operating rooms and a 6 bedded post operative intensive care unit. Theatres run from Monday to Friday and OPDs are held on Tuesday and Saturday.
