  Dental Courses
 
Bachelor of Dental Surgery
There are 2 courses of instruction for the degree of Bachelor in Dental Surgery:
i
A 5 years course as per gazette of Govt. of India Notification No. 182 dated 10 th September, 2007 for undergraduate students. Admissions of which are made through UP state Combined Pre Medical Test for 75% seats and through All India Medical Entrance Examination conducted by CBSE and list sent through Director General of Health Services, New Delhi, for 15% of the seats. There are 10 seats for nominees of the Government of India. However twelve months internship for 04 year BDS course from 2004 to 2007 batches shall continue as earlier.
ii
A 2 years' course for medical graduates to be followed by 12 months of compulsory internship. Candidates may apply for admission to the Director Medical Education & Training, UP.

  In the 1st year the students are taught and examined in :

General Human Anatomy including embyology and histology (200 marks)

General Human Physiology & Biochemistry (200 marks)
3
Dental anatomy, embryology & histology.
 The 2nd Professional Examination is held at the end of the 2nd year in :
1
General Dental Pharmacology & Therapeutics (200 marks)
2
General Pathology and Microbiology (200 marks)
3
Dental Materials (200 marks)
4 Pre clinical Conservative - only practical & viva voce (100 marks)
5 Pre clinical prosthodontics - only practical & viva voce (100 marks)
 The 3rd Professional Examination is held at the end of the 3rd year in :

General Medicine (200 marks)
2
Genearl Surgery (200 marks)
3
Oral pathology & oral microbiology (200 marks)
 The 4th or Final Professional Examination at the end of the 4th year consists of : 
1 Oral Medicine & Radiology (200 marks)
2
Pediatric & preventive dentistry (200 marks)
3
Orthodontics & dentofacial orthopedics (200 marks)
4
Periodontology (200 marks)

The final year (5th) Professional Examination is held in:

1 Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge (200 marks)
2 Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics (200 marks)
3 Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (200 marks)
4 Public Health Dentistry (200 marks)

After passing the final professional examination the candidates shall be eligible for the award of BDS degree and registration with the Dental Council of India.

Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) : These are 3 years' courses which commence in May. Course structure and content are in accordance with guidelines of the Dental Council of India. Candidates are eligible for entry after obtaining a registrable BDS degree. There are a total of 24 seats every year (12 through the All India Postgraduate medical Examination and 12 through the Uttar Pradesh Postgraduate Medical Examination)

Operative Dentistry
Pedodontics
The MDS degree shall be conferred after acceptance of a thesis and after the candidate has passed the MDS examination which is held at the end of 36 months. The examination consists of 4 written papers, clinical (or practical) and oral examinations.
Diplomas in Dental Hygiene (Department of Periodontics)and Dental Mechanics (Department of Prosthodontics): These auxiliary courses were started in the 1960s under Dental Council of India regulations. They are each of 2 years duration. Candidates are eligible after passing the Intermediate Examination with Science and Biology. The number of seats per year in each course is 20.
